Neurodermatitis

Neurodermatitis (atopic eczema, atopic dermatitis) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that occurs in episodes. It is accompanied by excruciating itching. It often affects the scalp, face and hands. In Germany, around 15 percent of children and two to four percent of adults have neurodermatitis. What is neurodermatitis?

Chronic or recurrent inflammatory skin disease that occurs in episodes. It almost always occurs in early childhood.

Symptoms:

Excruciating itching, dry skin, in the acute episode also oozing eczema

Cause:

The exact cause is unknown. Several factors appear to play a role in the development of the disease. Among other things, the skin barrier of the patient is disturbed. In addition, the tendency to neurodermatitis is inheritable.

Possible triggers:

Textiles (such as wool), infections (such as severe colds, flu etc.), certain foods, sultry temperatures or cold, psychological factors (such as stress) etc.

Treatment:

Avoid triggers, careful skin care, medication (such as cortisone), light therapy, climate therapy etc.
